The soil invertebrates can be affected by biotic and abiotic factors, like soil conditions, amount
of litter, topography (altitude and inclination of the terrain) and composition of the vegetation.
Ants have strong influences on ecosystems and are one of the most important groups in land
management. We examined differences in the distribution of soil ants, and their relationship to
environmental factors (percentage of clay, percentage of sand, pH of soil, inclination of the land
and amount of litter). On a system of trails that have been used by the Research Program in
Biodiversity (PPBio) covering a gradient of 25 km² in the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve we
collected 250 sub-samples of litter, in 25 parcels of 250 m of length and 6 m wide, using the
Winkler extractor. The reserve possesses ecosystems of ?terra-firme? forest and the trail system
represents a gradient of topographic soil factors and vegetation, avoiding categorizations. We
found a total of 4,995 individuals distributed in 6 subfamilies, 32 genera, 23 species and 85
morpho-species of ants. The genus Eurhopalothryx was registered for the first time in the reserve.
Ordination analysis (SSH, Semi-Strong Hybrid Multi-Dimensional Scaling) using qualitative data,
indicated differences in terms of ant species composition and the environmental variables.
Regression analysis indicated that the greatest amount of clay was positively related to the
presence of species, while the inclination of the terrain influenced negatively. This investigation
is part of a large inventory and is being continued through the data analysis of the results obtained
with Pitfall traps and sardine baits, and also focusing on the evaluation of other environmental
variables, like structure of the vegetation in the whole gradient being studied.
